The Boardroom to the Ballot: Can Capital Stabilize the Revolution?

The New Power Dynamic: Youth vs. Wealth

The upcoming election is a three-way battle for the soul of Nepal. On one side are the Conservative Veterans fighting for survival; on another is the Gen Z Force fueled by the September uprising; and emerging as a third pillar are the Industrialists who claim only they can fix the “economic rot” that drives our youth to migrate.

Case Study: The “Pathao” Candidate and the Gen Z Vote

Nowhere is the collision of business and the youth movement more visible than in Kathmandu–1, where Asimman Singh Basnyat, the managing director of the ride-hailing giant Pathao, has filed as an independent.

For the thousands of riders who depend on Pathao for their livelihood, Basnyat isn’t just a businessman; he is the creator of the “Gig Economy” in Nepal. During the September Revolution, Pathao riders were instrumental in maintaining local logistics when traditional transport was paralyzed. “We don’t need politicians who promise roads; we need leaders who understand the digital roads we already travel on,” says a 24-year-old rider. Basnyat’s candidacy bridges the gap between the corporate boardroom and the street-level struggle of the youth, posing a direct threat to the established political elite who have long ignored the “Digital Nepal” framework.

A Voice from the Economy

This surge of business leaders into politics is a desperate response to policy instability. As billionaire Binod Chaudhary noted during his nomination:

I understand the message delivered by the Gen Z movement. The era of pure politics is over; the era of economic transformation must begin. We cannot have a stable country if our primary export is our youth.

At Desh Bislesan, we must ask: Is the entry of billionaires a sign of a maturing democracy where “efficiency” is prioritized, or is it the final stage of “State Capture” where the wealthy simply buy the laws they need? One thing is certain—the March 5 election will decide if Nepal’s future is written in the language of revolutionary slogans or the language of an economic balance sheet.

To understand why billionaires are running, one must look at the “Fear-Free Environment” demand issued by the FNCCI and CNI. Following the September 9 attacks on luxury hotels and car showrooms—which caused over NPR 25 Billion in damages—the private sector has realized that political instability is no longer a “risk” but a terminal threat.

The World Bank projects Nepal’s growth to slow to 2.1% this fiscal year. This economic “winter” is exactly why business leaders are trading their executive chairs for parliamentary seats. They aren’t just running for power; they are running to protect their assets from a revolution that has yet to be pacified by prosperity.
